Sincerest Form of Parody: the lost ecosystem of MAD-inspired gross-out comics

Today marks the publication of Fantagraphics' magnificent archaeological comicsology, The Sincerest Form of Parody: The Best 1950s MAD Inspired Satirical Comics. This volume collects the rare, nearly unheard-of parody comics that sprang up in the early 1950s to jump on the bandwagon that MAD magazine set in motion. Many of the same artists who made MAD such a success (Jack Davis, Will Elder, Norman Maurer, Carl Hubbell, William Overgard, Jack Kirby, Dick Ayers, Bill Everett, Al Hartley, Ross Andru & Mike Esposito, Hy Fleischman, Jay Disbrow, Howard Nostrand, and Bob Powell) were represented in long-lost tiles like FLIP, WHACK, NUTS, CRAZY, WILD, RIOT, EH, UNSANE, BUGHOUSE, and GET LOST. Many of these are racier, grosser, and meaner than even MAD dared. There's also an engrossing appendix of annotations from editor John Benson, a MAD expert who wrote the additional text for the first run of MAD reprints.
I grew up on Cracked and Crazy, but these were late, late, latecomers to the MAD knockoff party, and never went as far as these lost titles.

Sean Hartter has designed this notional Joker-brand cereal box. He notes that his FB friends quipped, "Why So Cereal", "You wanna see a Trix?" and "Whatever doesn't kill you simply makes you eat more delicious cereal"! Spend some times poking around on Hartter's site. He's very good at this sort of thing.

The Daily Show Mocks Tucson Mexican-American Studies Ban (VIDEO)

Daily Show
The Daily Show's Senior Latino Correspondent Al Madrigal (also known as their Señor Latino Correspondent) went down to Tucson on Monday to investigate the city's recently instated Mexican-American studies ban.
Madrigal spoke with local proponents of the law which has outlawed the Mexican-American study program in K-12 public schools. School board member Michael Hicks gave justifications for the ban which were... err, underwhelming.
School board member Michael Hicks says he's never sat in on a Mexican-American studies class, but based on "hearsay" he presumes that they teach a violent anti-"gringo" message.
"I chose not to go to any of their classes. Why even go? Why even go? I base my thoughts off of hearsay of others," Hicks said to Madrigal.

Apropos yesterday's post about 1970s science fiction convention costumes, Strephon Taylor sez, "I just saw your post on the 1970's science fiction costumes. I made a documentary on the early northern California Star Trek conventions called "Back to Space-Con", it has a ton of costume footage, I think you will dig it. We have some of the earliest full sound film on the subject. We got contacted by the producers of Trek Nation for our convention footage! "

Open source "tricorders": handheld sensor packages for everyone

For the past five years, Peter Jansen, a Canadian scientist whose PhD is in neural computation and cognitive modelling, has been developing a series of open source hardware "tricorders" -- handheld sensor packages running GNU/Linux that can be used by everyday people to make and record observations about the world around them. There are several versions of the tricorder, some with sensors attached (atmospheric, electromagnetic, spatial), others that are "blank," with places to mount your own sensors. The latest version, the Mark IV, is still in development, and is intended to be mass-produced at low cost.

The Tricorder project emphasizes accessibility. The devices we build are meant to be as inexpensive as possible, so folks might have access to them without having to worry about the cost, or their difficulty of use. My hope is that someday every household — and every child who wants one — might have access to a small device that can easily be kept close in a pocket or bag, and quickly pulled out when curiosity strikes. By turning a walk home through the park into a nature walk, and Dad's spring time home repairs into a lesson about heat flow, it's my hope that everyday experiences will become opportunities to learn and develop an intuitive understanding and deep fluency with the science of our everyday world.
It is my deep belief that knowledge brings about positive change. It's possible that the same instrument that can show a child how much chlorophyll is in a leaf could also show how them much pollution is in the air around us, or given off by one's car. As an educator and a researcher, I feel that if people could easily discover things about their worlds that were also important social topics, that they would then make positive social choices, like reducing their emissions, or petitioning for cleaner industry in their communities. By having access to general tools, people can learn about leaves, or air, or clouds, or houses — or light, or magnetism, or temperature — or anything the Tricorder can help them see.
Most of all, the Tricorder is designed to discover things that we don't already know. I'm excited about what you can discover with it. And that's what it's about. Little discoveries, everywhere.

The Conservative Teen

Buzzfeed's Andrew Kaczynski selects the 9 best headlines from The Conservative Teen, a magazine for youngsters that will foster conservative values and counter liberal bias.
When I moved to the U.S., one of the first things I ever heard on the radio here was someone talking at length about how he hates bisexual people because they spread disease. He said it over and over again, emphasizing the word "hate" to ensure the listener understood him. Startled by it, I tuned in long enough to find out exactly whose show it was, thinking it must be a monologue or some other fiction. In honor of my introduction to American conservatism, here's the headline from his contribution to The Conservative Teen.

Alicia Silverstone Pre-Chews Food For Her Son, Bear Blu, Spits It In His Mouth

Is Alicia Silverstone getting her parenting tips from birds?
The actress' 10-month-old son, Bear Blu, is already eating solids -- as long as they've been pre-chewed. In the latest video posted on Silverstone's website, the 35-year-old feeds her baby by chewing up his food and feeding it to him mouth-to-mouth.
"I just had a delicious breakfast of miso soup, collards and radish steamed and drizzled with flax oil, cast iron mochi with nori wrapped outside, and some grated daikon. Yum!" she wrote on The Kind Life, the website for her vegan cookbook, "The Kind Diet."
The "Clueless" star explained, "I fed Bear the mochi and a tiny bit of veggies from the soup ... from my mouth to his. It's his favorite ... and mine. He literally crawls across the room to attack my mouth if I'm eating. This video was taken about a month or 2 ago when he was a bit wobbly. Now he is grabbing my mouth to get the food!"
"Pre-chewing" is actually a thing, but it's very uncommon in the US and other Western nations and not recommended by health care professionals, as it can pass infection and disease from parent to child.

The Blaze, Site Founded By Glenn Beck, Insinuates That Slain Teen Trayvon Martin Was Troublemaker

Martin, who was black, was walking back to his father's house after a trip to the convenience store in Sanford, Fla. on February 26. George Zimmerman, a neighborhood watch member who was identified by his father as Hispanic, called 911 and told the dispatchers that the teen "looked suspicious."
Despite being told by the dispatchers not to engage the teen, Zimmerman left his car and approached Martin. Neighbors called into 911 to report a scuffle, some cries for help, and gunshots. When police arrived, Zimmerman admitted to shooting Martin, who was unarmed, but claimed that he acted in self-defense. Zimmerman has not been arrested or charged, and the incident has attracted national attention.
“I can’t for the life of me understand how they can justify not making an arrest!” Sharpton said on a recent episode of his MSNBC show, "Politics Nation."
But Mytheos Holt, an associate editor at the Blaze, chided Sharpton "for being too willing to exploit racial controversy" and for dismissing claim of self-defense Zimmerman. Holt went further and criticized Trayvon Martin by insinuating that the slain teen was a troublemaker.
We’re also learning more about Trayvon Martin. According to reporters he had been suspended from school. The International Business Times says Martin’s suspension was due to last for 10 days. But what exactly was he suspended for in the first place? Sources sympathetic to Martin say he was suspended for “excessive tardiness.” However, a quick review of both the local policies for Martin’s school, the Dr. Michael M. Krop Senior High School, and of the Miami-Dade school district’s district-wide policies, raise some doubts

The table (called “Furni Fruktbar”) was given to him by film’s director David Fincher. If the winning bidder of the table lives in the Portland, Oregon area, Chuck will come and help set it up.
