Artist Levi Van Veluw Transforms His Head Into Unique Self Portraits
Dutch artist Levi Van Veluw makes incredible portraits of himself in which he is often the canvas. Over the years he has covered himself in ink, hair, stones, fake grass, and light generating foil, among other materials. His more recent work has increased in complexity: earlier this month we wrote about “Family,” an installation in which Veluw coated himself and four other people in wooden blocks in order to recreate a scene from his childhood. Back in 2008 we first spotted Veluw and his “Landscape” series.
Levi van Veluw´s photo series are self-portraits, drawn and photographed by himself: a one-man-process. His works constitute elemental transfers; modifying the face as object; combining it with other stylistic elements to create a third visual object of great visual impact.
The work you see therefore is not a portrait, but an information-rich image of colour, form, texture, and content. The image contains the history of a short creative process, with the artist shifting between the entities of subject and object.
Pioneers at the ready, Leningrad
On Retronaut, Viktor Bulla's "Pioneers defense drill, Leningrad." It dates from 1937, four years before the Siege of Leningrad, and that makes the weirdness vivid and poignant. So many of the children here would have died in the Siege, or lived through it in the civil defense force, eating wallpaper paste and digging trenches. How brave and ready they must have felt in 1937, though
skull watch
Hayden sez, "A good one for Halloween - this skull-shaped memento mori clock is historically important and even a little spooky today. The Art of Mourning site is all about death and love in jewelry and art, so there are many examples of the symbols of death throughout history."

Weird Beauty, Photos of Faces Painted in Bold Black & White Designs
Weird Beauty is a series by Russian photographer Alexander Khokhlov, in collaboration with make-up artist Valeriya Kutsan, where the faces of female models are painted in unique and visually powerful black and white designs. For the project, Khokhlov says “…we decided to deny any color in our series except black and white to make more accent on forms and volume.” You can see the whole Weird Beauty series at Behance.
The experiment should prove that usual simple forms, familiar things or characters can be a main part of wonderful beauty looks. Model faces in this project are not just canvases for the face-arts – they play their own role in each photo with different parts.

Ray Villafane & His Team Carve Huge Pumpkins Into Pumpkin Zombies
Last weekend at The New York Botanical Garden for their Haunted Pumpkin Garden event, master pumpkin, toy and sand sculptor Ray Villafane and his talented team from Villafane Studios brought their carving skills together to create an amazing Pumpkin Zombie scene out of three of the biggest pumpkins grown in the United States (one of which weighed in at 1,872 pounds). In the scene, the main Pumpkin Zombie (known as the Harvester) is shown pulling other pumpkin zombie minions out of the earth by their pumpkin vines. You can learn more and watch the process (captured in the videos below) as Villafane Studios talk and carve away at The New York Botanical Garden event. We have previously written about Ray Villafane and his amazing pumpkin creations.

Crucial Fiction, Ron English Solo Art Exhibition at Opera Gallery in NYC
Crucial Fiction solo art exhibition by influential New York contemporary artist and curator Ron English at Opera Gallery will display a series of new paintings by Ron that all collaborate with his former child self. The show will start on Thursday, November 1, 2012 and be on display until Thursday, November 29, 2012 at Opera Gallery in New York.
As stated in the Crucial Fiction publication :
The work address a fantastical question: What might happen if a 50 year old man at the height of his powers as fine artist and painter, could finally animate the elaborate visions constructed by his 8-year-old self, that boy who dug holes to China in the backyard while imagining every blade of grass as a green army soldier laid low by the advancing plastic hordes of cowboys, indians and assorted disposable heroes? What might result from the combustible alchemy of imagination and experience, of mastery and abandon? In “Crucial Fiction” Ron answers this question.
