The Elegant Ape Speaks...

The current resurgence of the caliphate can be traced directly to the training and arming of ninth century fundmentalists in order to make things uncomfortable for the Soviets during the occupation of Afghanistan.  Who thought that this was a good idea? What strategic significance did Afghanistan hold? Did someone in the Reagan administration want one of those groovy pakol hats? How this is not central in the consversation is a mystery.
