When I was a little kid, there was a bar right next to a bike trail my parents used to take me to that kept an old ape locked up in a cage out front on weekends. They gave it beer and let it chain smoke cigarettes, and people would always crowd around and laugh at it.
Humans have an amazing capacity for goodness, but we also have a great ability to inflict stupid, pointless damage. I guess it all goes back to George Carlin's 'Napalm & Silly Putty' concept.
