The anonymous urban explorer/photographer behind Detroiturbex.com is building a photographic record of Detroit’s abandoned buildings as way to spread awareness about the plight of the once thriving metropolis. As part of the project, the photographer has created a series of then and now composites that show the astonishingly rapid disintegration of Detroit’s abandoned buildings. The photos show how, over the course of a few months or years, the abandoned buildings are being vandalized, picked apart by looters and scrappers, and burned by arsonists. Some of the most striking composites are of the shuttered Cass Tech High School—the photographer’s “after” photos are compared to old yearbook photos that the photographer found in the school’s wreckage.
